Pregnancy, Labor & Delivery..
Touching the belly

I keep reading comments in magazines about how pregnant women hate when strange people come up to them and touch their belly.  This never even almost happened to me.  Has it to anyone?

It didn't happen to me that often.  Sometimes people would ask if they could touch my belly.  It never bothered me because I thought it was pretty neat, so I let them.

I rarely had strangers try to touch me. Although a friend of mine once said I had a "wall."  I never really was comfortable with anyone touching me, so I guess that's true.

I do think it's incredibly rude to just go up and touch someone's stomach without permission just because she's pregnant, though.

Lorelai: "Sure! I'll put it on my list, right under 'Gave me life.'"

It never happened to me either. I was teaching at a college and one of my students asked, so I let her. Other than that, no one even tried. It's weird - I just figured no one did that anymore!

It happened to me just a few times. I didn't really mind. I was just so excited to be pregnant. I just wanted the world to know!

I live in a REALLY small town, so when I went anywhere I ran into several people I know, and if I knew them really well they would touch my belly, not grope it and talk to it or anything.  Just a quick rub.  If I didn't know them well, they generally would ask.  I always let them though, I didn't mind it.

I teach 7th grade - on a daily basis I have at least one student try to touch and/or rub my belly.  And, I've had a few co-workers do this as well.  It makes me VERY uncomfortable.  With my students, I say "I don't touch your belly do I? So please don't touch mine." (politely of course).  7th graders I can handle, but I find it harder to address the co-workers who touch without permission.  It's really weird to me.  I never went around petting pregnant people's bellies when I wasn't pregnant, so I guess I don't understand the reason for why some people feel the need to.

I've had that done a couple of times.  I really didn't mind at all, I loved it really.  I, too, was just so excited to be pregnant that i didn't mind at all.  I personally wouldn't just go up to someone and touch without asking, though.  I think it's just polite to ask.

I have it happen all the time!!  I hate when people touch my belly!  The only ones I want to do it are DH and DS (and of course the Dr).  No one ever asks, they just do it.  I have made it very clear to my friends and family that no one is to touch the belly but they still feel the need to try.

I have had strangers in stores do it!  That is so awkward!

i worked in an asissted living facility and i constantly had people touching my belly. but they weren't really strangers because they lived there. i don't think i would have been comfortable with strangers touching my belly though, i'm just too shy for that i guess. it even bothered me when some family members would do it without asking. i think you should always ask atleast!

When I was pregnant with my son I really never got a BIG belly so noone really tried except my family, like my mom and sister which didnt bother me.

With my DD I had a perfect beach ball sitting right under my breast so it was high and strange looking so people did ask to touch it or tough and ask "Is it hard to breath?" I didn't mind females touching it but I did have a strange man try to rub it one day at the grocery store check out and i politely pushed his hand away. Honestly for the last month it hurt to rub it so I think people could read that I wasn't in the mood for belly rubbin' and didn't try.

I probably had that "Hands off" look on my tired face, LOL
